Parkway Veterinary Hospital Introduce
For pet owners across Massachusetts, finding a reliable, compassionate, and comprehensive veterinary hospital is a top priority. In the West Roxbury area, a name that stands out is Parkway Veterinary Hospital. This facility is more than just a typical vet's office; it is a full-service animal hospital that offers a diverse range of medical services, including specialties like physical rehabilitation and care for exotic animals. Whether your pet needs a routine check-up, a complex surgical procedure, or is recovering from an injury, Parkway Veterinary Hospital is equipped to provide high-quality care. This hospital is dedicated to serving the community and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all pets and their human companions.
The experience at any veterinary hospital can be deeply personal, and a number of reviews for Parkway Veterinary Hospital highlight both the positive and challenging aspects of their services. One long-time customer praised the hospital, stating, "We love Parkway and have taken our girl there for many many years. They’re always so kind to her and excited to see her." They also appreciated the staff's patience and understanding with their "nervous dog mama" and her "old lady dog," demonstrating the long-term, trusting relationships the hospital can build.
Conversely, a detailed review from a customer with a "reactive dog" pointed out communication and cost concerns. They noted that some medications were "many many many times more expensive than places like chewy," and a tooth extraction was a significant expense. The reviewer also shared frustrations over a lack of communication regarding appointment changes and policies, which was particularly stressful for a pet with behavioral needs. While the customer had a "smashing success" with a first appointment, they later felt that the hospital was not an ideal fit for them and their reactive dog. This review highlights the importance of open communication between pet owners and the hospital, especially for pets with special needs, and suggests that the experience may vary depending on the individual circumstances. It is clear that the staff are generally friendly, as noted by the two-star review, but that the overall experience can be complex.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I feel like animal hospitals (and human hospitals) these days in the world feel more like for-profit orgs than anything else, which I understand at the end of the day, but it saddens me. We had gotten medications like trazadone, gabapentin and Proin here and they are many many many times more expensive than places like chewy (for gaba/trazadone I was told they can't price match because they don’t come in standard bottles and there’s manual counting involved. And b/c the pills themselves are like ~$0.20 each, the majority of the bill is for the counting. For Proin they can price match because it is a standard bottle - so my suggestion is to ask for the match, if you care about it, that is). But the big $$ was the singular tooth extraction - I think it was similar to the cost of my dad's root canal procedure.I adopted my reactive dog when she was one. And because of that, I have been way more careful and demanding than before about communication (because it’s hard to deal with curve balls when you have reactive dogs). Our last appointment was a negative experience because of largely communication and I was vocal about my dissatisfaction (things like getting there in the middle of Feb at a time I was told then found out the doc wouldn't be there until later...or that someone new will come and bring us in, which sounds ridiculous if you have a normal dog but if you have reactive ones, you know that sometimes it's a "process", so a heads up would've been great). I was then told that we should probably go seek out another hospital that could meet my communication standards/needs. Refreshing, sure, but also sad. I never expected to ever hear that from a hospital, even if it’s for pets. During the same call, I was told that i should go and refill any medication I needed, which I didn’t even think of and definitely appreciated their suggestion. But at the time, I had just refilled some prescription and didn’t need additional ones immediately. A couple months later when I knew I was going to need more soon, I went to refill it with chewy and it was declined. I called and was told that I actually only had a short period of time to refill. That’s fine, since we were parting ways. But wouldn’t it have made sense to actually INFORM your patient of that policy? Ie how many days/weeks I would have if I wanted to refill anything so I don’t miss that deadline? I felt stupid. Then when they finally put in an exception and refilled it, they gave me essentially only TWO stressful events’ worth of pills. Again, just not a good feeling.I know we are not easy patients and are probably looked at as the frustrating/demanding duo. While my first appointment a couple of years ago was a smashing success (I really raved at how great the experience and the Doc at that time was to my social networks on and offline), I would unfortunately likely NOT recommend this establishment if you have reactive dogs. It may and could work but i think it also depends on the humans. I definitely am more vocal and probably not ideal to the staff. Two stars because the front office was generally friendly and I had a good first appointment experience a couple of years ago. I think for a “normal” dog, it’s a good place as far as services go though!
July 20 · Angela LWe love Parkway and have taken our girl there for many many years. They’re always so kind to her and excited to see her. She’s an old lady dog now, so I also appreciate that they’re so understanding and patient with this nervous dog mama.
August 15 · Lauren PernaI have only been taking my cats here for a year. I moved here a year ago and knew nothing of the area and my local friends had no pets. I put out a query on a local neighborhood chat about a good vet. I must have gotten 30 replies. 10 of them were for Parkway and all included glowing remarks. I have not been disappointed. Their front desk is friendly, knowledgeable and kind, the doctor joyful and skilled. She followed up with a long phone call discussing care and what to watch for in my elderly cat with thyroid issues whom she has been treating with fantastic results. This is a great, solid practice. My cats and I are happy here!
July 17 · Joy SteinbergIlene Segal has been our Vet for over 20 years. I have complete confidence in her and though I now live in Florida I make sure to get my dog back to Boston every year for his annual visit.I’ve also found the front desk staff and the Vet Techs I’ve encountered to be kind and competent. My recent visit was no exception.
August 17 · Karla FlemingWe’ve had several appointments at Parkway Vet with Dr. Celia Friedman Cowan and have been beyond pleased with her care. Dr. F.C is always available to answer questions, provides thoughtful follow-up, and demonstrates exceptional knowledge in her field. We highly recommend Dr. F. C without hesitation.
