A to Z Pet Shop Introduce
For pet lovers across Connecticut, finding a pet store that aligns with your values and provides a high level of care is a top priority. A to Z Pet Shop, a local, women-owned small business in Derby, aims to be that trusted destination for everything from pet supplies to finding a new animal companion. This shop prides itself on being a part of the local community, offering a personal touch that you often don’t find in larger, corporate chains. The store is known for its wide array of pets and pet supplies, and according to some customers, the animals are "so cute and well taken care of." They welcome visitors to interact with some of the animals, such as bunnies and ferrets, which adds a unique, hands-on element to the shopping experience. A to Z Pet Shop's focus on connecting pets with their forever homes is a central part of their identity.
However, it is essential for prospective pet owners to be aware of the complexities involved in purchasing an animal, especially puppies, from any pet store. While some customers have had positive experiences, praising the staff and the care of the animals, other reviews have raised serious concerns about the health of the puppies sold. Multiple customer accounts detail tragic experiences with puppies that were diagnosed with serious health issues shortly after being brought home, including parasites, malnutrition, and congenital conditions like megaesophagus. These customers assert that these issues were present at the time of sale and point to a larger problem of neglect or poor breeding practices. While the store has a health guarantee and may offer reimbursement, the emotional and financial toll on families who have gone through these experiences is significant. It is a stark reminder for potential buyers to exercise extreme caution, ask detailed questions, and be prepared to take immediate action if health problems arise.

When considering where to find a new pet or supplies in Connecticut, A to Z Pet Shop presents a choice that has both appealing and concerning aspects. What is worth choosing about this shop is its identity as a local, women-owned business that aims to be a friendly and welcoming part of the community. For those seeking basic pet supplies or accessories, the store provides a convenient option with a wide variety of products. The ability to interact with some of the animals on-site is a nice feature that can make for an enjoyable visit. However, for those considering purchasing an animal, particularly a puppy, the negative experiences shared by other customers are a significant factor to consider. The claims of puppies being sold with serious health issues, allegedly due to neglect or poor breeding, are a major concern. While the store offers a health guarantee, the emotional and financial distress described by affected customers is a powerful reminder of the risks involved. It is crucial for potential buyers to do their due diligence, ask to see veterinary records, and be prepared for potential complications. In essence, while A to Z Pet Shop may be a suitable destination for pet supplies, it is a place where you must proceed with caution when making the life-altering decision to bring a new animal into your home.

September 13 · JUpdate**: Thank you for your condolences, but your response misses several key points. Chia’s condition was the result of neglect and poor breeding, which is unacceptable. From the moment we brought her home, Chia had parasites, megaesophagus, severe malnutrition, and untreated pink eye. These problems should have been noticed long before we got her. The fact that a 3 month old puppy was so sick shows she was not properly cared for and likely came from bad breeding. Megaesophagus, while rare, is often caused by neglect or bad genetics, neither of which should have been passed on. This was not just a “rare case,” it was a preventable tragedy.I also know that many other local vets have treated sick puppies from your shop (and other pets shops alike), and that’s very concerning. Your store has a reputation for selling sick animals and has been warned about this problem before. This is not just one rare case — it’s a bigger issue. You say you were supportive, but in reality, we struggled to get the right care for Chia. While you may have helped with the costs in the end (due to the health guarantee and lemon law), the lack of responsibility in the beginning on your part made this process extremely difficult. In the end, you failed to provide us with a healthy, well cared for puppy. Chia’s passing is a painful reminder of the consequences of neglect. It’s important that others are made aware of the risks of buying animals from your store. All the negative reviews are true! I have been grieving for months after buying a puppy from here that passed away. I finally have the strength to tell her story.I bought a 3 month old french bulldog from A to Z Pet Shop exactly a year ago from today (February 23, 2024). She threw up a little upon bringing her home. We kept an eye on her and hoped that maybe it was just nervousness of being in a new environment. The next day, she continued throwing up, but this time there was blood. We rushed her to the ER. It was discovered that she had 2 strains of parasites: giardia and cystoisopora and was diagnosed with congenital megaesophagus and had pink eye that needed to be treated. She also weighed 5.9 pounds when she needed to be at least 10 pounds to be considered healthy weight. She was so lethargic and dehydrated and was seen several times by the ER. We were told by the ER and her primary care that we may need to consider euthanization options because of how sick and little she was. We fought to keep her alive. The ER bill came out to thousands of dollars. We got on the phone with Tara, the owner to A to Z. She said sorry, but there was nothing she could do for us. Luckily, my boyfriend at the time was going through the documents and found the A to Z Pet Shop Health Guarantee that states each puppy is guaranteed from any illness for 20 days. There's also a lemon law that protects people in these situations. That got Tara's attention to work with us!We went with the reimbursement option (for us to keep Chia and for them to reimburse us for the ER bills) because we loved Chia and wanted to care for her.Unfortunately, Chia had to be on a lot of medications so she could live a normal life due to how sickly she was when we bought her. She wasn't able to develop a strong immune system during the time she needed to and it took a toll on her. Her health was in waves throughout the several months we had her and ultimately, her body could not take it any longer. We loved and cared for her deeply. She is always our baby in our hearts. I have more proof of Chia's story if this shop DARES to say anything is false! Also, the ER bill uploaded is only one of the bills so you can get an idea of what this puppy and we went through.
March 09 · Madelene MejiaSold me a Pacman frog that died less than a week later even though I cared for it properly. Would never buy lizards or amphibians from them again.… Update after response: And now you reply to try and not take responsibility. Yes, I contacted the store. No one gave a damn. You guys are the worst!
June 09 · WhatUSeeintheShadowsI got my puppy Honey Bun almost 4 years ago. I went in with my children today and had the pleasure of meeting the owner. She allowed me to take up WAYYY too much of her time talking and showing her pics of my baby honey. These past 4 years with her have been amazing and it’s all thanks to A to Z petshop. We would recommend them 10 times over! Also, enjoy some pictures of Honey over the years!
August 20 · shakya brownI’ve been coming to A to Z pet shop for the past few months after I moved into town and I have nothing but amazing things to say! They are so kind here and always willing to work with customers. I come here for bugs for my chameleon and they special order her dubia roaches for me. One week I noticed some of them came dead and they were quick to swap out with a brand new container free of charge. Same thing with my fogger, it had a manufacturer issue and the manager was so quick to order me a replacement. Everyone here is so kind and willing to make you happy! I love coming here and all the workers are so sweet! Amazing small buisness keep up the amazing work!!!
