My puppy Bella, who’s only about 4–5 months old, started throwing up because something had gotten lodged in her throat. My 8-year-old was in tears, thinking he was going to lose her, and seeing her in distress like that was heartbreaking. (We’d had her for less than a week.) You can imagine how high my stress level was.Bella wasn’t even an established patient yet her first appointment at Heights and Hill wasn’t scheduled until that Saturday, and this happened on a Thursday. Still, I called and explained what was going on. It was also just an hour before closing time, so I wasn’t expecting much, but without hesitation, they told us to come in.Dr. Urgo and her team were nothing short of incredible. They were calm, kind, and truly compassionate. I was blaming myself because I was the one who gave her the bone from Marshalls (not blaming Marshalls, just being honest- lol). They helped us through a moment that felt completely overwhelming and treated Bella like she was already part of their family.After examining her, Dr. Urgo said she would likely need an endoscopy. They called several emergency animal hospitals to try and get her in, but the nearest places weren’t offering the procedure that day. The only one that was available was on Flatbush, and the price tag was between $3,000–$4,000 ☹. That may not be a huge deal for some, but for me, it was a lot to process in the moment.Dr. Urgo understood completely and genuinely wanted what was best for Bella. She asked if I was okay with her trying to remove the piece of meat from Bella’s throat manually and thankfully, she was successful. I’m truly so relieved and grateful.Heights and Hill say their goal is to provide the highest quality medical care and to treat every patient like their own and that’s exactly what they did. They made us feel seen, heard, and cared for. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in the way they treat not just animals, but the people who love them.We’re so grateful to have found a place like this. June 06 · Dione AlexanderLove the doctors and staff at Heights & Hill! They are so patient and gentle with my cat who acts like a complete demon at the vet (I’m really sorry for his behavior). They treat us like family and know who we are the minute we walk through the door. While my cat doesn’t feel the same, I am so grateful to have Heights & Hill as our vet. You can tell these guys truly love and care for animals.
March 27 · AaronDisappointing Experience During a Critical Time;During one of the most challenging moments a pet owner can face, the support and empathy of a veterinary practice are crucial. Unfortunately, my experience with Heights & Hill Veterinary fell far short of these expectations when we needed them most.Our beloved dog, Gobi, was suspected of having lymphoma during a visit to their facility. His condition declined rapidly over just four days, a bewildering and heart-wrenching development for any pet owner. During this critical time, the response from Heights & Hill was sorely lacking.Despite understanding the constraints of a small practice, I was dismayed by the lack of compassion from the staff and the unavailability of the doctors. At a time when professional guidance was desperately needed, the inability to secure even a brief phone consultation added to our distress. The reception staff’s apparent lack of empathy only exacerbated our frustration and sorrow.While I did receive an email from Andrew, which I appreciated, it contained no concrete follow-up information or any indication of when they might be able to see us again. Tragically, by the time we might have received further assistance, Gobi had already passed away.This experience has left me deeply disappointed in Heights & Hill Veterinary. When pet owners entrust the health of their beloved animals to a practice, they expect a level of care and empathy that was not met in our case. It is my hope that this feedback prompts a reassessment of how urgent cases are handled so that no other pet or owner has to endure what we did.
March 27 · Reina GovindarajanUnfortunate I have to write this review as the first few visits were pretty decent. However our August visit was an utter disaster.We brought our senior dog in to have her private area looked at. I left the voicemail for the office after hours explaining what I wanted to have examined. I then responded to the most recent email which happened to the email about the distemper vaccine. The office responded to the email but they did not ask any further questions which was the first mistake. A clinic should ask questions like "What exactly are you making the appointment for?" "Anything else you want examined?"Met w/ Dr. Kai. The 2 Desk staff were so loud that we had to ask Dr. Kai to close the door to the examine room multiple times to block out the noise. It didn't fully solve the problem.Dr. Kai barely looked at her private area, which was the whole point of setting the appointment. Instead focused on other things and then said the Distemper vaccine was not a priority, giving her age. We agreed.However, after we mentioned moving out of the country in the coming months, she started to push for the vaccine, not mentioning any potential side effects until the vaccine was administered. She casually mentions "if she vomits or face swells just call us."FYI: No agency in the US or in Europe, requires the DHPP (Distemper) vaccine so it was absolutely not a priority on multiple levels.Within 2 hours of giving the vaccine our pup had an allergic reaction: face swelling, vomiting and struggling to breathe. This office closes at 8pm how could we even call for help? We rush to the ER.I felt not informed of potential side effects. Even if her reaction was rare we should know that a possible ICU visit or death is one of the "rare reactions".The ICU @ VERG confirmed it's consistent with allergic reaction from the distemper vaccine.To make worse: Dr. Cai completely missed the UTI.I sent an email to Heights and Hill at 10:30 PM while I was sitting in the waiting room stressed and worried, updating them and asking them to reimburse us for the emergency visit as this was preventable and unnecessary vaccine.They didn't respond to my email so the next day so I called them at 12:30 PM. They've been open for 4.5 hours at this point. No one had responded or acknowledged me. They were clueless. Receptionist kept saying it's been forwarded to the manager. They said I got hostile on the phone when really I was just upset, scared, and felt they didn't care. I never cussed at anyone.Would've been easy for them to email me back at: "Hey we're sorry to hear that, we escalated to the manager will get back to you soon as possible."That quick acknowledgment would have showed they cared.Once our pup was healthy and picked up from ICU (Relief!) I sent them the bill $3000 for the ER visit to reimbursement, they refused.Lily the manager sent an email trying to change the story and cover their tracks.They did admit there was a disconnect in the communication regarding the vaccine.One of a doctor's priorities is to make sure that the communication is clear so that the patients or their owners understand exactly what the care or vaccine involves and possible side effects BEFORE the care/vaccine is given, not after.This office takes absolutely no accountability for anything.People make mistakes and this office was unwilling to admit to any mistake on their part. In the end I asked let's just settle this and refund me the $200 exam fee because your doctor clearly missed the UTI (the whole reason for the appointment) they refused and unfortunately that's why I'm writing this one star review.I would never recommend this veterinarian office.The doctor is inexperienced. The front desk is unprofessional.Lily the practice manager never called me or tried to understand or smooth over the situation.Thankfully, our pup is healthy and home now.People make mistakes.Not trying to to make the situation better and just doubling down is disgusting.This office clearly shows how not to run a service business.
