I called ahead of time and spoke to Ms. Blair. She was so kind and helped me to understand that Mr. White does comic book stands at different convenient stores!! Which is different! (In a good way lol) I scheduled a time to come in and Mr. White was there and met me on time. (Which is a plus! We hate tardiness.) There is only a small selection of comics at the location as, he is restocking, but I was able to find my favorite 😍!! Harley Quinn (A cute nickname my sweetheart gave me lol). I appreciate them for their kindness and can't wait to come back and see what else I can add to my collection! See you guys soon!! - Erica Slack

Freaziecomics Introduce

For many Michiganders, the search for a new comic book to add to a treasured collection is a quest in itself. In Sterling Heights, a local, Black-owned small business is doing things a little differently. Freaziecomics is not your typical comic book store, and that's precisely what makes it a unique and interesting place to explore. While some businesses focus solely on a large storefront with countless aisles of comics, Freaziecomics has a distinctive business model that adapts to the community's needs, bringing comics directly to you. This approach is rooted in the owner's passion for the medium and a commitment to making comics more accessible to enthusiasts across the region.

Freaziecomics is a small business with a big personality, identifying as proudly Black-owned. This is a significant aspect of its identity, contributing to the rich diversity of small businesses in Michigan. The store's unique approach to retail, including its "comic book stands at different convenient stores," shows a forward-thinking and innovative spirit. It's a testament to how local entrepreneurs are finding new ways to connect with their customers and build a loyal following. The in-store experience, while perhaps more limited in selection at times due to restocking, offers a personal touch that you won't find in larger, corporate-owned chains. It’s a place where you can talk directly with the person who curates the collection and get recommendations based on your personal tastes.

The business, as noted in a customer review, operates with a personal and direct approach. A customer, after speaking with Ms. Blair, learned about the unique comic book stands, and was able to schedule a time to meet with Mr. White. This one-on-one interaction is a key part of the Freaziecomics experience, showing that they value their customers' time and are willing to accommodate individual schedules. While this model may be a departure from what some customers expect from a traditional comic book store, it provides a tailored and personal shopping experience that is truly one-of-a-kind. It is clear that the business is focused on building relationships and creating a community of comic book lovers who appreciate the personal touch.

Freaziecomics is located in the heart of Sterling Heights, a convenient spot for many comic enthusiasts in the metro Detroit area. You can find them at 43800 Van Dyke Ave suite 7, Sterling Heights, MI 48314, USA. This central location makes it accessible for a quick visit, whether you are running errands or making a dedicated trip to find that special comic.

In terms of accessibility, the store has made thoughtful accommodations to welcome all members of the community. They offer a wheelchair accessible parking lot, wheelchair accessible restroom, and wheelchair accessible seating, ensuring that visitors with mobility challenges can have a comfortable experience. This commitment to inclusivity is a testament to the business's dedication to serving everyone. Furthermore, the store identifies as LGBTQ+ friendly, creating a welcoming and safe space for all customers. For those arriving by car, there is a free parking lot available, which is a convenient feature that eliminates the hassle of searching for a parking spot. However, it's important to note the store's unique scheduling policy. As mentioned in reviews, a visit to the physical location requires an appointment. This is an essential detail for anyone planning to stop by, as it helps manage customer flow and ensures someone is available to assist you personally.

The services offered by Freaziecomics are tailored to provide a unique and personal experience for comic book collectors.

  • In-Store Shopping by Appointment: The primary way to shop at the physical location is by making an appointment. This ensures a dedicated, one-on-one experience with the owner, who can help you browse the current selection and discuss your collecting interests. As one customer noted, meeting Mr. White "on time" was a plus, highlighting the value placed on punctuality and customer service.

  • Mobile Comic Book Stands: A standout feature of Freaziecomics is their innovative approach of setting up comic book stands at various convenient stores. This service brings their curated selection directly to different parts of the community, making it easier for people to discover and purchase comics without needing to travel to the main store. This is a brilliant way to reach a wider audience and engage with the community in new and interesting ways.

  • Curated and Restocking Inventory: While the physical location may have a smaller selection at times due to their mobile operations, the inventory is constantly being restocked. This means that with each visit, you might find new and exciting comics to add to your collection. The fact that a customer was able to find her favorite, "Harley Quinn," even with a small selection, proves that the store’s focus is on quality over sheer quantity, ensuring they have sought-after titles.

There are several key features and highlights that make Freaziecomics stand out as a unique local business in Michigan.

  • Black-Owned Small Business: Supporting Freaziecomics means supporting a Black-owned enterprise in your local community. This is a significant aspect for many customers who prioritize shopping at diverse and inclusive businesses. It contributes to the local economy and helps foster a more equitable business landscape.

  • Unique Business Model: The combination of an in-store location with a mobile comic book stand service is highly unique and innovative. It demonstrates a creative approach to retail that sets them apart from traditional comic book stores and allows them to serve a broader customer base.

  • LGBTQ+ Friendly: Freaziecomics prides itself on being an LGBTQ+ friendly establishment, providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all comic book fans, regardless of their background or identity. This commitment to inclusivity helps build a strong and diverse community of collectors.

  • Personalized Service: The requirement of an appointment for in-store visits means customers receive a highly personalized and attentive shopping experience. This is a great benefit for serious collectors or anyone looking for a specific comic, as they can get direct assistance from the owner.

In the world of comic book collecting, Freaziecomics presents a different kind of experience. The personalized, appointment-based model is a clear signal of their commitment to customer service, offering a one-on-one consultation that you simply can't get in a crowded store. While this might not suit everyone's shopping style, for those who value a dedicated interaction, it's an excellent choice. The fact that the business is Black-owned and LGBTQ+ friendly also makes it a valuable part of Michigan's diverse business landscape, appealing to those who wish to support inclusive establishments. The free parking and wheelchair accessibility are also major pros, making it an easy and accessible place to visit.

However, it is worth noting the mixed reviews regarding the business hours. One review mentioned a frustration with what appeared to be a random closing and the need for an appointment, which seems to have led to a missed visit. This highlights the importance of adhering to the "appointment required" policy. For a positive experience, it is essential to call ahead, as demonstrated by the customer who had a great visit after speaking to Ms. Blair. This business model is not about casual drop-ins; it’s about planned and purposeful visits. For those who understand and respect this structure, the reward is a personal and rewarding shopping experience. If you are a collector who appreciates a more curated, personal approach and enjoys supporting innovative, local businesses, Freaziecomics is definitely worth considering for your next comic book hunt.
