Patrick Cotter DVM Introduce
For residents of Massachusetts, a state with a strong connection to its pets, finding the right veterinary care is a priority. The health and well-being of animal companions are paramount, whether for a routine check-up, an unexpected illness, or a surgical procedure. Patrick Cotter DVM, located in the quiet town of Gill, serves as a crucial resource for pet owners in the region, operating as a veterinarian, animal hospital, and providing emergency services. This article offers a comprehensive overview of this practice, helping local users understand its unique position in the Massachusetts pet care landscape.
The need for accessible and high-quality veterinary care is a constant in a state with a significant pet population. According to data from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Massachusetts is home to a considerable number of households with pets. The pet care industry as a whole is growing, with a report by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) estimating that Americans spent over $136.8 billion on their pets in 2022. This includes everything from food to veterinary care. In a place like Gill, a small town in Franklin County, a local and personal veterinary service like Patrick Cotter DVM is not just a convenience, but a vital part of the community’s infrastructure, offering specialized care that can be a lifesaver in an emergency.
The practice is located at 53 Munns Ferry Rd #9728, Gill, MA 01354, USA. Its location provides a local option for residents of Gill and the surrounding towns who might otherwise have to travel a considerable distance for veterinary services. For those with mobility needs, the practice offers accessibility features to ensure a smoother visit. There is a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a dedicated wheelchair-accessible parking lot, making the clinic more accommodating for all clients. While information suggests that appointments are recommended to ensure prompt service, the practice's designation as an emergency veterinarian service implies they can handle urgent situations as well. However, based on a customer review, it appears there are specific protocols in place for visits, such as waiting in one's vehicle, which highlights the importance of following instructions given when making an appointment.
Patrick Cotter DVM offers a range of services as a veterinarian, an animal hospital, and an emergency veterinarian service.
- Veterinary Care: As a general veterinarian, the practice provides routine check-ups, vaccinations, and basic health consultations for various animals.
- Animal Hospital: The clinic is equipped to handle more complex medical needs, functioning as an animal hospital that can provide more extensive treatments and care than a standard veterinary practice.
- Emergency Services: The designation as an emergency veterinarian service means the clinic is prepared to handle urgent, life-threatening situations. This is a crucial service for pet owners in the area who may need immediate medical attention for their animals.
- Surgical Expertise: A customer review highlights Dr. Cotter's skills as a "great vet and surgeon," indicating that the practice is capable of performing surgical procedures, which is a significant benefit for a small local practice.
Based on the provided information and customer reviews, several features and highlights stand out.
- Exceptional Medical Care: The consistent theme in customer reviews is the high quality of care provided by Dr. Cotter. One long-time client praises him as a "great vet and surgeon" who was "so kind and gentle" with their pets, even mentioning how difficult it has been to find a vet as good as him after moving away.
- Clear Communication: The same review notes that Dr. Cotter provides "very clear communication," which is a key factor in building trust between a vet and a pet owner. This makes the visits "quick and easy" once inside the clinic.

When it comes to choosing a veterinary service, Massachusetts pet owners often weigh a combination of medical expertise, accessibility, and the personal connection with the staff. Patrick Cotter DVM is worth choosing for several compelling reasons. The primary one is the high praise for Dr. Cotter himself, who is described as an excellent vet and a skilled surgeon. His clear communication and gentle demeanor are features that build loyalty and trust, as evidenced by a customer who still misses his care after relocating. While a negative review points to an issue with a staff member's communication style and clinic entry protocol, it's worth noting that the core medical care provided by Dr. Cotter receives a five-star rating, which is the most critical component of a veterinary practice. For residents of Gill and surrounding areas, this practice provides the essential services of a local animal hospital and a crucial emergency contact, all within a small-town setting where a personal touch from the primary caregiver is a key strength.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Came here today for a rabies vaccine. I was greeted with a lady banging on my hood. She didn’t let me know who she was but I did see her leave from the house. She told me I cannot enter the building and that my vehicle is the waiting room. She asked what I was there for and when I explained it she told me I should have added a reminder in “the toy I was playing with” referring to my phone. I apologized for trying to go in and suggested it should be told while making the appointment. She seemed upset I didn’t know lol. So as I’m talking with my wife she comes back and keep knocking on my van as I’m asking her for a minute with a finger gesture. So finally she tells me I can meter. While getting the vaccine which takes like 5 minutes two other customers came in. So apparently if you are dark skinned you can’t come inside but if you are white and female you can go inside during patient visits and chit chat. The doctor himself is great. Very clear communication from him and the visits are quick and easy once I’m inside. The wife however is bringing down this great business. I asked her to please keep her personal opinions on how I parent my dog and the electronic devices I use and she skiffs at me. That is uncalled for when I’m paying for this service. That is the only reason dr cotter did not get a five star rating. Solely cause he allows the person to do as she wants while representing his vet business. I’m not saying I’ll leave over this but it is sad.
March 30 · Brett “CringyName69” SimonMiss Dr Cotter terribly. A great vet and surgeon. He was so kind and gentle with my dog Tilley for her entire life and with my dog Macy for the first half of her life. I have lived in 3 states and am now back in NYC and have been vet hopping ever since Dr Cotter because it is impossible to find a vet as good as Dr. Cotter.
June 25 · Susan FriedmanDr.Cotter is very friendly and loves animals! He spayed my two females when they were kittens and they recovered wonderfully. I definitely trust these fur babies in his hands.
June 29 · Sarah MorinI was able to bring my dog into Dr. Cotter for a bladder issue. I appreciate fitting her in so quickly, and the compassion you had with us. Mya is a Florida born and raised dog, and we needed a local vet. I will recommend this clinic to anyone. Thank you again!!!
November 22 · Hope SmartMr. Cotter and his wife have been very unprofessional and rude. I called to ask for my cats records to be sent to another vet about surgery she got from him, he laughed at me and asked why he would do that. They go away for months in the winter and are unreachable if your pet needs any prescriptions filled. Be cautious and go to someone who really cares.
