Long Island Veterinary Specialists Introduce
For pet owners across the New York region, the need for specialized and emergency veterinary care is a top priority. When a pet faces a complex health issue or a sudden emergency, having access to a state-of-the-art facility with a team of board-certified specialists can be a literal lifesaver. Long Island Veterinary Specialists (LIVS) in Plainview, NY, is a leading emergency and referral hospital that fulfills this critical need. This facility is a hub of advanced veterinary medicine, offering an extensive range of services from emergency and critical care to sophisticated surgical procedures and a dedicated veterinary pharmacy. As a referral center, LIVS works closely with primary care veterinarians to provide the most advanced treatments possible, ensuring a seamless and high-level continuum of care for your pet.
The hospital's mission is to provide an unparalleled level of specialized veterinary care. Unlike a general practice, LIVS focuses on complex cases that require a higher degree of expertise, equipment, and resources. Their team includes specialists in numerous fields, such as oncology, neurology, cardiology, and orthopedics. This concentration of expertise means that pets with serious conditions have access to the latest diagnostic technologies and treatment plans, often avoiding the need for a long, arduous trip to a more distant medical center. This not only enhances the quality of care but also reduces the stress on both the pet and the owner during a very difficult time. The compassionate and professional nature of the staff, as noted in numerous positive reviews, is a recurring theme, making a difficult experience more manageable for families.
LIVS is also an emergency hospital, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This round-the-clock availability is a cornerstone of their service, providing immediate and expert care for pets facing a medical crisis. Whether it is a sudden injury, an unexpected illness, or post-surgical complications, the emergency team is always on standby to provide urgent medical attention. This continuous operation provides invaluable peace of mind for pet owners, knowing that expert help is available at any time, day or night. The hospital's ability to act as a referral center also means that pet owners can be directed to their facility by their primary veterinarian for specialty care, ensuring that they receive the best possible treatment for their pet's condition.
Long Island Veterinary Specialists is conveniently located at 163 S Service Rd, Plainview, NY 11803, USA. This address places it just off the Long Island Expressway, making it highly accessible for residents of Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as the wider New York metropolitan area. The strategic location on a service road allows for easy entry and exit, which is crucial during an emergency situation. The facility also provides ample on-site parking, which is a significant convenience and removes a common source of stress for pet owners visiting a busy medical center.
Accessibility is a key priority for the hospital, which has designed its facility to be welcoming to all. It features a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. These accommodations ensure that all clients, regardless of their physical abilities, can navigate the hospital with ease. The availability of gender-neutral restrooms further underscores their commitment to a comfortable and inclusive environment for all visitors. The hospital recommends appointments for specialty services, which helps ensure that clients and their pets are seen in a timely manner, though their emergency services are, by their nature, available at all times without an appointment.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I had a positive experience and recommend this modern, clean, well staffed facility. Special recognition to Donna and Kerri. Both were kind, professional and compassionate. Thank you. My pet had an eyelid bulge removed successfully. Day before photo and after the procedure. But back to normal today after the sedative wore off.
April 25 · Lucille OrtegaThe staff here is absolutely wonderful. Our rabbit fell deeply in love with one of his caretakers today and the doctor was so thorough, professional and friendly. We’re very grateful our guy was in such good hands today! Thank you for taking such good care of Lurch!!!
August 19 · Shannon HenryI cannot say enough good things about Long Island Veterinary Specialists, and especially, Dr. Domenic Marino. My dog, Whiskey (46 lbs), had dislocated his hip and my regular vet said he would either need a FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) or a THR (Total Hip Replacement). He advised that I set up a consult with an orthopedic surgeon. My first consult was with a dr (not at LIVS) who only performed FHOs. After that first consult, I felt sure that the FHO was the way I should go, as that dr had led me to believe that the risks were greater with a THR. She also suggested that at my dog’s age (3 years old), she would worry that he might need another THR in his lifetime. In addition, a vet who has a physical therapy practice had told me that the recovery period for a THR is very difficult and painful. I decided to keep my consult appointment with Dr. Marino at LIVS anyway, even though I was sure that nothing would change my mind. Well, I was wrong and I am SO glad that I investigated both surgery options. Dr. Marino was so wonderful in my consult. I came prepared with literally over 30 questions about the THR procedure including what are the risks, what are the statistics about each risk type, what action is taken if one of the risks occurs, how does recovery compare between THR and FHO, what are the advantages/disadvantages of each surgery, how does physical therapy compare, how many THRs has he done and what is the success rate, etc. I had so many questions that I doubted that Dr. Marino would have the time and patience to answer all my questions, but instead he said “That’s what I’m here for.” and he answered every question I had. I left the consult absolutely knowing that I was going to bring Whiskey to have the THR by Dr. Marino. Dr. Marino allayed my fears that were planted by the dr from my first FHO consult at the other vet hospital. He said that that every Board-certified surgeon knows that hip replacements last the lifetime of the dog. In the over 2000 THRs he did, he never had a dog return for a 2nd hip replacement over the dog’s lifetime. He also said that the recovery is actually easier with a THR as compared to FHO and he said Whiskey would be comfortable rather than in great pain. Also, although I probably would have had to bring my dog for PT to a physical therapy facility had I gone with the FHO option, Dr. Marino said the PT after his THR should be leash-walks by me, increasing the length of walk over a period of time. (Taking him in and out of a car could even be risky following a THR surgery and PT with leash-walks is all that would be needed. In contrast, the best-case scenario after an FHO depends on PT at a facility based on research I had done. ) With those two worries out of my mind (i.e. a 2nd THR being needed and a very difficult recovery) and trusting my gut instinct, it made sense for me to choose the THR option, after which he said my dog would be able to rough-house with my other two dogs and run with no limitations after 4 months. Every single thing he said turned out to be true. I am so happy I made the decision to have a THR, since my dog is way too young and energetic a dog to have a limited range of motion that even the most successful FHO surgery would produce (at best, 70% range of motion, as opposed to 100% range of motion with a THR). The cost difference between a THR and an FHO surgery was about $3000. (However, since an FHO surgery probably would have required months of PT at a facility, the cost difference might be closer to $2000 or less. ) Thank God, I was able to afford this and that I was able to make the best decision for my dog. After only 4 months following surgery, Whiskey was running around the yard full speed having a ball with my other two dogs, rough-housing and just being the happiest dog! It is not even possible to tell he had a hip replacement. I also want to commend all of the staff at the front desk, the assistants, everyone, who I interacted with. Everyone was polite, professional and caring. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dr. Marino!!!
April 21 · Angela ADr. Wiggins is truly one of a kind. From the moment we brought our rabbit, Stella, in, she showed an incredible level of professionalism, knowledge, and compassion. Stella was very sick—she had a severely inflamed reproductive tract, was peeing blood, and her blood count was dangerously low. It was overwhelming and scary, but Dr. Wiggins handled everything with such calm, confident care that we instantly felt more at ease. She kept us informed every step of the way. Even when the updates weren’t always easy to hear, Dr. Wiggins called regularly and explained everything clearly, always showing empathy and honesty. When it became clear that Stella needed emergency surgery, we trusted her completely—and she delivered. The surgery was successful, and Stella received the absolute best care throughout the entire process. Dr. Wiggins’ attention to detail, her ability to explain complex medical issues in a way we could understand, and the genuine love she has for her patients made one of the hardest experiences so much more bearable.A huge thank you as well to Ashley, who was incredibly kind and helpful—especially when it came to Stella’s aftercare. She made sure we had everything we needed and made us feel so supported during recovery. If you’re looking for a veterinary team that will treat your pet like their own and handle even the most complicated and emotional cases with expertise, care, and compassion, Dr. Wiggins and her team are the absolute best. We are forever grateful for the way they cared for Stella—and for us.
August 04 · danielle pepitoI can’t say enough about LI Veterinary Specialists - the entire team, from the admin staff to the veterinary team, showed such kindness, patience, and genuine care during one of the hardest moments of my life. Every single person I interacted with was compassionate and professional, and I felt supported every step of the way. The biggest thank you goes to Dr. Birkner. She is an extraordinary doctor and an even more extraordinary person - patient, skilled, empathetic, and a truly beautiful soul. In a time that was heartbreaking and overwhelming, she guided me with such grace and care, and I will never forget that. I will always be grateful to Dr. Birkner and the entire LIVS team for the skill and compassion they showed when I needed it most.
