March 26 · PiyushI hope the owner sees this.Do something about it or animal control will be called and animal welfare complaint will be made. And names of managers will be mentioned.I was so upset what I witnessed in Petco of North Plainfield. The animals were living in horrible conditions and were sick! I checked out every enclosure and this is what I saw:- more than half of the fish tanks were dirty and multiple tanks had more than at least 7 fish dead plus dying ones in them in them, the 2 small gold fish tanks had about 25 dying/dead fish in them all sunken to the bottom which was shocking no one noticed. The salt water fish tanks were COVERED in Algae, you could barely look inside them. The employees are not testing the water / nor properly cleaning the tanks.- The three hamster enclosures were on the top were filthy with the corner where the hamster go to do their business being SOAKED in pee, obvious signs of negligence of properly cleaning these hamster cages. All three of these hamsters were priced at %50 off (not sure if the discount is because they were sick please read my next observation about the rats)- The next neglected animals I saw were the rats, who also had a dirty cage with obvious signs that no one cleaned it for a while. Out of the 3 present rats there was 1 that was very clearly sick looking, moving lethargic and its eyes were almost closed and leaking. These rats were priced at a discount from $14.99 to $7.99. (Again: are you discounting just because they are sick?)- Last observation: The ferret enclosure, which only had 1 ferret, was also not being cleaned. It had a HUGE pile of feces in a corner the one ferret definitely won’t poop out over a night or two.I can’t comment on the reptiles as I don’t have experience with those kinds of animals.To add on, there were two employees present and there were not a lot of customers that would be taking up their time to at least clean or tend to ONE of these animals. A heavier set Hispanic girl was working and a heavier set African American employee was present also. Manager could care less.I hope the owner sees this comment and takes proper action to improve animals conditions. These conditions were the worst and most shocking I have seen out of all the animal stores I have been to, and this seems to be a recent phenomenon as the animals seemed to have been taken better care of a couple months ago (when a young thin Asian employee was working before I witnessed him always tending to the rodents)

You’re an animal shop that apparently doesn’t support animal abuse and takes care of animals but you use products that come from animal testing? How dare you call yourself a ‘Petsmart’ when you aren’t even smart enough to not support animal testing, hope you guys see this.
July 03 · aleeDead/dying fish and horrible service.Over half for the betta fish were sick. Most had very severe swim bladder disorder paired with clamped, rotting fins; one had a massive parasite hanging out of her. A few were very bloated (looked like it could be early stages of dropsy). I only saw 2 fish with unclamped fins. In addition, there was a dead betta fish on the counter, the water in the cup was discolored and the fish was starting to decompose, which makes me wonder how long it had been dead and unnoticed.I brought this up to an employee and was met with a very passive aggressive attitude. I pointed out the particular fish that were sickest and she grabbed them and tapped on the cups with her acrylic nails. These fish were very sick, stressed, and nearly dead, and she proceeded to stress them out further. The first rule you tell children with fish is not to tap on the glass.She took the sickest fish to the back (maybe 10-15) and said that they would be "taken to the vet." I highly doubt these fish will be cared for properly as the treatment for them would cost more than the store is selling them for.I know that there is little chance for change in this industry that abuses these fish, but the employees should take the lives of these animals more seriously. Just because these creatures are small that does not mean they deserve this.
