Heart of Vermont Vet: At-Home End-of-Life Care for Pets Introduce
For pet owners across Vermont, the bond we share with our animal companions is an incredibly special and powerful one. When a pet is nearing the end of their life, the decision to say goodbye is one of the most difficult a family can face. In these moments, having a compassionate and supportive partner is crucial. Heart of Vermont Vet, led by Dr. Erika Bruner, is a specialized veterinary practice dedicated to providing at-home end-of-life care. This is a unique and invaluable service for Vermonters, as it allows pets to pass peacefully in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes, surrounded by their loved ones. Unlike a traditional clinic visit, where a pet might feel stress or anxiety, a home visit ensures a calm and tranquil final moments. The practice’s focus on this specific, and deeply personal, area of veterinary care shows a profound commitment to both the animal and their human family. They understand that this is not just a medical procedure, but a deeply emotional and significant event that deserves to be handled with the utmost empathy and grace.
The stellar reputation of Heart of Vermont Vet is built on the overwhelmingly positive feedback from clients who have experienced their services firsthand. Reviews consistently praise the owner, Erika, for her calming presence and gentle demeanor. One reviewer noted that Erika treated their senior cat "like she had known her for years," and was "very thorough in explaining what would be happening." This level of personalization and care is what makes the service so special. The client felt immense relief knowing that their cat was relaxed and in her own bed for the process, and also appreciated that Erika took the time to listen to their stories and share a laugh with them during such a devastating time. This shows a deep understanding of the human-animal bond and a commitment to providing support for the humans as well as the pets. Another client echoed these sentiments, expressing immense gratitude for Erika’s guidance and empathy, and for the kind and thoughtful staff who provided support over the phone. They noted that saying goodbye to their beloved feline at home, surrounded by their other companion animals, was a decision they were so glad they made. The fact that the staff also provides pet loss and bereavement support highlights their holistic approach to this difficult journey.
The practice's approach to end-of-life care is not just about the final goodbye; it's about the entire journey. They offer consultations to help pet owners assess their pet’s quality of life and determine the right time for euthanasia. This guidance is invaluable for families who are struggling with this difficult decision. They also offer palliative care, which is a form of comfort care that focuses on managing pain and symptoms to enhance a pet's quality of life in their final days or weeks. Services like veterinary acupuncture, pain management, and other treatments can be utilized to make a pet's final time more comfortable. The business is also women-owned and proudly identifies as LGBTQ+ friendly and a transgender safe space. This commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment for all members of the Vermont community is a testament to their values. The ability to receive immediate care and urgent care services also provides peace of mind, knowing that help is available when a pet is in distress. The practice’s commitment to house calls for a variety of services, including physical exams and consultations, makes it a convenient and stress-free option for pets who may have anxiety about leaving their home. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Erika gave us such comfort in a difficult time. Her presence is very calming. She treated our senior kitty like she had known her for years. She was gentle and very thorough in explaining what would be happening. This very much eased our minds! Having her come to the house and our kitty being relaxed and in her own bed made things a bit easier. Erika let us share stories with her and laughed along with the antics we were describing! For our pet's end of life, it was as perfect as it can be. It's very clear that Erika not only cares for pets but for their humans as well! Thank you for making such a difficult time easier!
August 20 · Sarah PErika helped us immensely through one of the hardest times of our lives. I am forever grateful to her and am so glad we decided to say goodbye to our beloved feline at home surrounded by our other companion animals. Erika was also very helpful to us during an end of life consult prior to the end of life visit. I do not like the conditions I met Erika in, but I am so happy to have met her and received her guidance, wisdom, and empathy during such a devasting time. I also want to note that Erika's staff are phenomenal as well. I think I spoke to 2-3 different staff members on the phone and all of them were so kind and thoughtful.
June 20 · VanessaIt was such a comfort during a difficult time to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Erika Bruner and Heart of Vermont Vet. She provides such a thoughtful and necessary service for pet owners, and she does it with expertise, care and understanding. We were able to say goodbye to our aging and ill family dog on our own terms in her favorite spot in the backyard, which brought us great peace at such a sad time. Erika was there for us and for our pup in just the right ways, and she and her team were also so efficient and responsive and had helpful answers to what felt like impossible questions that I was asking. My wish for everyone staring down heartbreaking decisions and transitions with their pets is to know that Dr. Bruner is out there as a resource and support.
August 08 · Alyson RichardsObviously a very difficult time - Erika was an excellent listener and guided us through the process as it happened extremely diligently. Couldn't recommend her more.
September 08 · Graham ZugWe can not thank Dr. Erika Bruner enough for making an absolutely heart crushing decision, that had to be made for my son's best friend of 13 years, as peaceful, passionate and comforting as it could possibly be. Your tenderness and making sure that Diesel, Tim Sprague, Jasmyn Sprague my husband and myself were well informed and able to process in our own time without being rushed or judged is appreciated more than you know. Thank you so much for all you do for the furbaby family member as well as the humans!!! 💞
