Adam's Pet Safari Introduce
For residents of New Jersey looking for a local pet store with a unique selection, Adam's Pet Safari in Chester presents an interesting option. This small, independent business positions itself as a destination for those interested in a wider variety of animals and supplies than typically found at larger chains. The store operates as a pet store, aquarium shop, pet supply store, reptile store, and tropical fish store, all under one roof. The owner, Adam, and his team, who identify as a small business, specialize in "rare and exotic fish and reptiles," and also carry a range of premium pet foods for more common household pets like dogs and cats. The store's tagline "Live life on the wild side" reflects its focus on these specialized and unique animals. They aim to provide a convenient, one-stop-shop for a range of pet needs, particularly for those with more specific interests in the world of aquatics and herpetology.
While a small business often aims to provide personalized service, customer experiences can be varied. On one hand, some older testimonials found online praise the store for its knowledgeable staff, good selection of reptiles and fish, and fair prices. These reviews highlight a positive long-standing relationship with the store and a sense of trust in the owner's expertise. However, more recent public reviews present a different perspective, raising significant and serious concerns. These negative reviews speak to issues of animal welfare, citing "dirty tanks" and "over stocked animals" that are "crammed in tiny spaces." One customer details a horrifying experience with fish they purchased that were "sick and wiped out our entire tank," while another recounts a tragic history of purchasing four rats that all died from respiratory illness, which they believe was contracted at the store. The reviews also describe unsanitary conditions, bad smells, and a lack of proper cleaning. It is clear that while some customers have had positive experiences with the store's product selection and staff, others have had deeply troubling encounters that call into question the care of the animals on-site.
This dichotomy in feedback suggests that a customer's experience at Adam's Pet Safari may depend on the day and what they are looking for. The store's own website highlights its offerings in exotic pets and supplies, and some customers seem to find what they need, especially for hard-to-find items. The store's dedication to having a wide variety of species, including various types of cichlids, rare plecos, and different kinds of reptiles, is a definite draw for niche hobbyists. However, the serious nature of the negative reviews, particularly those related to the health of the animals, must be carefully considered by anyone planning a visit. For New Jersey residents, it is important to be aware of the full spectrum of customer experiences to make an informed decision, and to be prepared to ask detailed questions and observe conditions closely upon arrival.

What is Worth Choosing
For residents of New Jersey, choosing a local business like Adam's Pet Safari is about seeking a unique and specialized shopping experience. The store's primary value lies in its focus on exotic animals, offering a variety of fish and reptiles that are difficult to source elsewhere. For a niche hobbyist, this can be a significant draw. The store also offers the convenience of in-store shopping and accepts modern payment methods, making transactions easy. However, it is imperative for potential customers to be aware of the serious concerns raised in recent reviews regarding animal welfare and sanitation. The discrepancy between older positive testimonials and recent negative feedback suggests that customer experiences may vary greatly. While some may find the exact rare pet or specialized product they are looking for, others may encounter conditions that are deeply concerning. Therefore, for a New Jersey resident, a visit to Adam's Pet Safari is worth considering for its unique inventory, but it is advised to proceed with a cautious and discerning eye, observing the conditions of the animals closely before making any purchase. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The fish were all in dirty tanks that smelt bad and the fish we bought were sick and wiped out our entire tank that has been fine beforehand for several weeks. This is our last one that just died this morning (see in picture below). They also have so many over stocked animals and just tank after tank stacked on top of each other with dirty bins of water “The vats of doom” and many of these tanks are excessively dirty. I understand a shrimp tank is supposed to have some dirt/ mess in it but nowhere near that much sludge. Next time sticking with petsmart much cleaner, healthier, cheaper and way more humane.
January 18 · Koren LayThis place is terrible, I’m actually surprised it’s still open. So many animals crammed in tiny spaces. The air quality probably isn’t great for them. I’ve personally bought 4 rats from this store within the past 3/4 years or so. All of them, yes all 4, ended up dying from a respiratory illness. Two needed to be put to sleep because medication just wasn’t working. The other two rats progressed so quickly I didn’t have time to get them to the vet and they passed suddenly. One of the rats was sick the night I brought him home. He started to make honking noises when breathing and he started to breathe through his mouth. I took him to the shower for steam and sat with him for a few hours, keeping him warm and breathing and managed to save his life until I could get to the vet. Also, I’m pretty sure all of the rats had mites, and lice when I bought them. I tried to figured out where they came from because these dang small bugs kept coming back after months. The only explanation in my mind is the rats had them at the store. Which makes sense now, Because the store is gross. The rodents were all crammed into small glass aquariums. Rats need good air quality and ventilation due to their respiratory system are weaker. And I’m sure the baby rats were bullying each other. They can get rough sometimes and they get stressed in such a small spaces. Anyways, The whole place stinks, and it seems like they don’t do water changes or clean tanks or anything. I don’t believe this place should be open. And I will personally try to get them shut down. Which is a shame because it did seem like they really cared for the animals at first. Some of the employees would kiss the rats and say goodbye when I bought them. When I get more rats in the future, I will be doing more research and getting them from the correct places and/breeders.
June 20 · Cheyanne KendraI am absolutely mortified after going to this store this week. The animals are kept in HORRIFIC inhumane conditions and living in filth. I fail to understand how this business is supported by ANYONE and that people are not reporting it to the state department of consumer affairs because it is not legal to keep animals in such poor conditions. Please don’t be a bystander and report this place so these poor animals are not suffering and dying from negligence. I am attaching photos which show mice shoved into small dirty boxes on top of each other with low water supply. The aquariums look as if they have not been cleaned in 10 years. There was one with a literal swamp in it. There is mold everywhere and the store smells horrible. The owner should retire if he is too lazy to take care of the store or hire staff that does. He does not care about animals at all, nor his store and should face legal repercussions for animal abuse. The store looks like a hoarding situation. I have never seen anything like this in my whole life and it’s incomprehensible that in this day and age and in a nice town like Chester nothing has been done about this business. Please give these poor animals a voice they are suffering.
April 24 · Kasia RLove coming here! Lots of selection and different animals. Fish are great! Pricing is pretty decent. If you have any pet allergies however, I wouldn’t venture in. There is definitely a strong pet odor, probably the ferrets and rats/mice. Recommend stopping and checking it out!
May 26 · RoséVery disorganized place with lots of animals in small cages.I felt terrible visiting, rabbits were in a little place 4 of them. The birds there were like 10 in a little cage.Almost all fish tanks were dirty with green water or stuff floating in them. All kinds of things on the floors and suspicious tank with green water in it right in the middle of the floor.I'm my opinion de conditions were those animals are kept are not humane at all.😔
