Petco Introduce
When you're a pet owner in Salem, Oregon, having a reliable and well-stocked pet store is a vital part of caring for your animal companions. Petco, located at 4450 Commercial St SE, serves as a comprehensive destination for a wide range of pet needs, from basic supplies to specialized products and in-store services. As a national brand, Petco offers a vast inventory and the convenience of a one-stop-shop, catering to everything from dogs and cats to fish, reptiles, and small animals. This article will provide an in-depth look at what this particular location has to offer, including its services, features, and overall value to the local pet community.
Petco's business model is built around providing a holistic "Whole Health" experience for pets, meaning they aim to address not just the physical needs but also the emotional and behavioral well-being of animals. Beyond the shelves stocked with food, toys, and accessories, the store integrates various services to help pet owners provide the best possible care. This includes professional grooming, dog training classes, and even vaccination clinics through their Vetco services. This approach allows a pet parent to accomplish multiple tasks in one visit, from picking up a bag of kibble to getting their dog's nails trimmed or enrolling them in a puppy training class.
The store's wide variety of live animals is also a key feature. In addition to puppies and kittens available for adoption through their local partnerships, this Petco location is noted for its sections dedicated to fish and reptiles. For those interested in starting or maintaining an aquarium, they offer a range of supplies, from tanks and filters to live fish and plants. Similarly, their reptile section provides everything needed to care for these unique pets. This specialization makes the store a valuable resource for hobbyists and a convenient entry point for new pet owners looking to explore different types of companions.
However, it is important to consider all aspects of the customer experience, as documented in reviews. A negative experience with an unhelpful or rude staff member, particularly concerning live animal care, can be a major detractor. The review about the betta fish highlights a frustrating encounter with an employee and raises questions about consistency in customer service and live animal care knowledge. While this is a concern, it is often balanced by positive feedback from other customers who have had great experiences with grooming services and staff who were helpful even near closing time. The variability in service quality from one visit to the next can be a reality for large retail chains and is worth being aware of.
The store's commitment to convenience is evident in its various service options, including curbside pickup, in-store pickup, and delivery. These features make it easy for busy Oregonians to get the supplies they need without spending a lot of time in the store, which is particularly useful for a quick trip or a last-minute need.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1BEWARE OF THEIR CARE FOR FISH!!We bought a $20 Betta fish two weeks ago. Today, I went to check on the fish and he had died (RIP George Washington Fair). I brought the fish back with a separate water sample from the tank.I also cleaned the tank and filled it up with clean water so it would be ready for our replacement fish. To make sure this water would be good and it was not something on my end that I was doing wrong, I ALSO brought in a sample of that water.I was told to talk to Roxy in the fish area. She did not greet me or say anything when she saw me - she just stared at me…so I explained the situation and handed her the fish and water sample of the water he died in. That water did test positive for ammonia. She also tested the clean water (exactly the same as I had put George Washington in when he first got him) and it tested all good. She then asked if I had a filter and I said I did not (I do have a heater). She said it was my fault the fish died because his tank was too full of ammonia and I needed a filter. I found this ironic considering they keep their Betta fish in containers with standing water and no filter…..I’ve also had Betta fish in this same container for YEARS. Our last Betta lived a long life of almost five years.Roxy was extremely rude and based on the conversation seemed completely uneducated on how to care for Betta fish or the fact that ammonia levels would test higher in water after a fish had died (hence why I brought the clean water for testing also). I asked for a refund and she said no because they only “guarantee the health of the fish” (hello??) so I told her I would not be purchasing there again to which she said, “have a great day!”, in an extremely snotty tone. I have taken my dog to Petco for grooming and after this experience I am considering finding a new place to do that as well.Based on my fish experience, I’d give one star. Because I’ve had positive grooming experiences, I gave it two.
June 05 · Tarah FairFr refused cash refund just because they were too lazy to get the actual manager. He said he was the manager though?Visit approx 1 year later: friendly and helpful staff, even though I was there 10 minutes before close, they were helpful enough to make me a bag of the specific amount of crickets I wanted and not have to buy the pre-bagged ones. Review changed from a one to a five in hopes that the employee who refused to help me is gone! :)
February 21 · claimed lizardI always go in to get my pug the individual dental treats that are up by the registers and they are usually buy 3 get 1 free. Mind you these treats are $1.49 a piece I had 4 of them. I paid at the registers $11.87. I asked the guy to go check the price again because I've never paid that much for these and he went and looked and came back with the answer as yes maybe they just aren't on sale anymore, he even asked another worker and she said yeah if they aren't showing up in the registers under that special price than they probably aren't "on-sale" anymore. Literally these dental chews are $1.49 how does even 4 come up to over $11. Weird - anywaysHe rang up the wrong barcode clearly. Kinda disappointing because I usually always go to the location, but I've had better luck at the Lancaster one lately. And the dog food I get my pug is $2 cheaper over at the Lancaster store as well.
August 27 · Amanda PyleNoone wears an uniform or name tag. The manager was rude and seemed to be put out that I had an online return. When I tried to return it online, they said I needed to go to a store. Then on top of it, I had an air bar that broke and was returning it and the manager acted like I broke it on purpose or something. I love petco and even worked at one years ago. I will not go back to this one again.
July 28 · Home GirlThis place is a ridiculous joke of a store now and their new manager is misinformed, rude, and needs to go. I have an updated prescription from my vet for any kind of Hills prescription food for my cat who is 15. I have purchased food here without issues for years when my Vet is out. 6 times in the last 3 months they have refused to sell me the food for various reasons including it bring the wrong kind even though my current prescription says any kind. I will never visit this store again even though I used to spend about $150-$200 a month. Hope they go out of business, and soon.
