The provided customer reviews highlight some important aspects of the Pittsfield Petco store. One review mentions the wide variety of products, noting that they have supplies for different types of pets. Another review, however, raises concerns about the living conditions of the fish, describing "poorly kept tanks" with "growth on/in most of the tanks" and fish showing signs of "disease and death." The presence of multiple tanks marked "under observation" is also noted, suggesting that animal health issues are present. This feedback suggests that the care for certain live animals in the store may not always meet a high standard, which is an important consideration for customers.
Another customer review expresses significant disappointment with a bird purchase. The customer states that a newly purchased baby cockatiel had its "wings clipped incorrectly" and needed professional veterinary care for its beak. The review also notes a lack of socialization and a lack of paperwork on the bird's origin from the staff. This particular experience points to potential issues with the store’s knowledge of certain animal species, specifically birds, and a lack of proper care for the animals they sell. The review also mentions the store feeling "kinda run down." These are crucial details for local users to consider when evaluating where to buy a pet or supplies.

---For pet owners in Pittsfield and the surrounding areas of Massachusetts, the Petco on Merrill Road offers a convenient option for general pet supplies. As a well-known chain, it provides a familiar and expansive shopping experience, with a vast selection of food, treats, and toys for dogs, cats, and small animals. For those seeking basic supplies or a specific product from a major brand, the store's accessibility and broad inventory can be a significant benefit. Its presence in the community provides a ready source for common pet needs without requiring a trip to a larger city.
However, the provided customer reviews introduce important considerations for potential shoppers. The concerns raised about the health of the live animals, particularly the fish and birds, and the perceived lack of knowledge among staff regarding certain species are serious issues for any pet owner. The experience of a newly purchased bird needing immediate veterinary care and the reported unsanitary conditions of the fish tanks should be taken into account, especially if a customer is planning to purchase a live animal. These firsthand accounts highlight a discrepancy between the store's potential as a convenient retailer and its actual execution in animal welfare. Ultimately, while Petco in Pittsfield may be a go-to for standard supplies, customers should proceed with caution and a critical eye when considering live animal purchases or relying on staff for specialized advice. It is a place for general convenience, but for more specific or sensitive needs, exploring other options might be a better choice.

The poor fish are in really poorly kept tanks. There is a ton of growth on/in must of the tanks, fish in various stages of disease and death in some of the tanks, with several saying "under observation." One tank I couldn't even see into it was so covered in growth.Generally, the place is feeling kinda run down.
April 19 · Weston MarlowOnly giving this store a 2 star rating. Never had an issue with the store prior to this week when we purchased a baby cockatiel. The poor thing had his wings clipped incorrectly and his beak has to be filed down at the vet. No socialization skills what so ever. I hate to say this but the new people at this store don’t seem to know much about birds at all. Had no clue the bird had been transported up from Florida so even if I needed to get in touch with the breeder I couldn’t because I never got any paper work on him
August 30 · Dominique RyanWe have an anxious one year old schnauzer who nonstop barks when he sees people. At our previous groomer, we heard things about how he was very unmanageable and behaviors that did not match our dog at all. We decided to try grooming services with Brittany at Petco and I will not go anywhere else. She is incredibly patient and kind with our dog and his groom looks amazing every time. She explains everything very well to us when it comes to his service and has even told us he is an easy groom. If you have an anxious pup who loves to bark, I highly recommend bringing them here as you know they will be cared for properly.
August 11 · Vanessa DeweyIt pains me to go in to this location. I manage a retail store and have been in this business for 30+ years. Service is terrible. More often than not I am waiting for someone to ring me out and have had to go find someone to man the register. The person in charge ( assuming it's the manager) has a scowl and acts like he hates his job. I'm going to online shopping to avoid this painful experience every other week
August 05 · William HapemanPetco Pittsfield should be shut down. Today I got some catfish and shrimp. Two shrimp died before I even made to the register. Was told I had to go give them back. Used my points without permission. The only reason I went was because my son wanted to. Usually I go to Benson's or drive to Bennington. Save time and don't go here.
