Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine Introduce
For pet owners in New York City, finding expert and compassionate veterinary care for a dog or a cat is relatively straightforward. However, for those with more unique companions—such as birds, rabbits, reptiles, or other exotic animals—the search for a qualified veterinarian can be much more challenging. The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine stands out as a premier destination in the city, an animal hospital and veterinary pharmacy exclusively dedicated to the specialized needs of these extraordinary pets. This clinic fills a critical niche, providing a haven where a hamster, a parrot, or a rabbit receives the same level of advanced medical attention as a more common household pet.
The hospital is celebrated for its team of veterinarians and staff who have dedicated their careers to the care of exotic animals. Their deep knowledge base allows them to understand the specific needs, behaviors, and health issues of a wide range of species, from snakes and lizards to guinea pigs and chinchillas. This specialization is a major point of relief for pet owners who have previously struggled to find knowledgeable care. As one customer noted, a visit with Dr. Halasz for their hamster BB was a wonderful experience, with a veterinarian who was "kind, patient, empathetic, and very gentle." The success of the prescribed medication, which led to BB's full recovery, is a testament to the expert advice and tailored care provided.
Beyond the clinical expertise, the center is known for its compassionate approach and the genuine care its staff shows for every animal. The front desk staff, assistants, and doctors are all praised for their kindness and professionalism. Another review highlighted how the clinic, and specifically Dr. Lyle Cleary and staff member Nicole, saved their two bunnies from a potentially fatal condition, praising their "attention to detail and thoughtfulness." This combination of clinical talent and emotional support makes the center a trusted partner in the health and well-being of a beloved pet.
The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine is located at 562 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10024. This Upper West Side location is a crucial hub for exotic pet owners throughout the city, including Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens. While parking can be a concern in New York City, the clinic's location on Columbus Avenue makes it accessible via public transportation and offers paid street parking. The facility itself is designed to be welcoming and inclusive, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. Furthermore, the clinic is LGBTQ+ friendly and has a gender-neutral restroom, demonstrating a commitment to creating a safe and comfortable environment for all clients.
Appointments are recommended to ensure that the staff can dedicate ample time to each patient. This planning helps the clinic run smoothly and ensures a thorough examination for every animal, which is particularly important given the complex needs of exotic pets. The drop-off services and curbside service are also valuable features for busy New Yorkers who need to streamline their visit.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Thank you to the staff for a great visit, especially Dr. Halasz. She was kind, patient, empathetic, and very gentle with my hamster BB, who means so much to me. She answered all my questions, gave me advice, and recommended the best medications to help my BB. After a week on his medicine, he finally had the strength to go back on his wheel and seemed more energetic. It's been over a month now, and he is back to normal, and it's all thanks to the amazing staff from the receptionist to the assistants to the doctors. Thank you very much.
June 02 · Kimberly RamosIf it weren’t for this place both of our darling bunnies very well may have died from LLT. Of course it’s takes a team of loving talented, and professional doctors and staff, but Dr. Lyle Cleary is the one who saved both Lilikoi and Maui from almost certain death. We can’t thank him enough for his attention to detail and thoughtfulness when it comes to caring for the ones we love most. Nicole at the front desk also deserves every compliment she gets for her knowledge, expertise, and invaluable advice when it comes to everything lagomorphs ;)
April 02 · Morgan HarrisonThank you to everyone who works here. They are kind, patient, and very helpful. They answered all my questions and concerns regarding my leopard gecko Josie. They made me feel like they cared about my pet.
June 28 · Kayla Jessica SerranoI went up here for the very first time today after having been disappointed by the medical knowledge of my previous vet when it came to birds. Indeed it was his repeated misdiagnoses that led me on a search for an expert, and I found one here, Alexandra Halasz.I brought my bird, Rico in for a consult that would have raised the ire of many a less professional vet. As someone who works in human medicine I brought my friend who owns the practice I work in with me, on face time. This was not done to challenge the vet just so we could better understand the intricacies of avian medicine together.Rico was treated exceptionally well, our concerns listened to and addressed and I am happy to say he started eating again soon after I returned home (following some fluid and B complex injections)Can I say I love this place, it's a bit of a hike but worth it. It is spotless and inviting and everyone is extremely knowledgeable and helpful.Once Rico gets his full strength back he will be back for his surgery and I feel he is in very capable hands.Oh and the prices are very reasonable too.Highly recommended!
June 21 · Lee PenmanI’ve been taking my bunny here for the last four years. They’re so knowledgeable, communicative, and friendly. Always willing to explain everything and able to field any questions without making you feel silly! Everyone on staff is so kind and caring. Whether it’s a wellness visit or emergency my bunny is always in great hands.
