Pet Shop Introduce
In the heart of Allston, Massachusetts, a neighborhood known for its unique and independent businesses, lies a pet store that defies the conventional mold. The Pet Shop at 165 Harvard Ave is a place that sparks a variety of reactions, but for those who take the time to look beyond the surface, it offers a deeply personal and knowledgeable approach to pet ownership. Unlike a large, corporate-owned chain, this establishment is a reflection of its owner's passion and expertise, offering a different kind of experience for local pet lovers. For Massachusetts residents seeking a companion, whether it's a traditional pet or something more unique, The Pet Shop provides a direct connection to a wealth of animal knowledge and hands-on guidance.
The initial impression of the store might be a bit unconventional, as noted in customer reviews. It's described as "wicked small," and perhaps a bit dusty, but what consistently shines through is the owner's profound love and care for his animals. Customers highlight his deep knowledge, describing conversations that go beyond a simple transaction and delve into the history and specific care needs of each animal. This level of personalized education is a significant advantage over the hurried, impersonal experience found in many larger retail environments. The owner's own pets, described as friendly and playful, serve as a testament to the loving environment he creates.
This unique pet shop caters to a specific kind of clientele: those who are looking for a true partnership with their pet and who value the experience of learning directly from an expert. The store's focus on low-maintenance animals, which they refer to as "companion pets," is designed to fit the busy lifestyles of many New Englanders. They pride themselves on not selling dogs and cats, but rather focusing on a wide selection of more exotic creatures. The review of customers who bought kittens from here many years ago suggests the store's offerings may have changed over time, but its reputation for providing healthy animals with longevity is a consistent theme.
The Pet Shop also offers a comprehensive array of supplies for the animals it sells. From specialized food and habitats to toys and accessories, the owner can guide customers to the right products to ensure their new pet's well-being. This all-encompassing approach, from the initial consultation to providing all the necessary supplies, makes the store a convenient and reliable resource for those embarking on their pet ownership journey. The fact that the owner is willing to take the time to explain "each step to take to care for them" is invaluable, particularly for new pet owners or those acquiring an animal for the first time.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1After reading the reviews I was nervous of going inside - However, after speaking with the owner - he speaks with so much knowledge & care for his animals - Rather than going into am traditional pet store to buy an animal - the owner will give you an history of the animal & each step to take to care for them. His own animals he has in the shop with him are so loving - First walking into the store, being greeted by these "bears" (bear is their name in other languages & they are as big) were so friendly & playful when you take the toy & the cat which my daughter loved followed around to be petted ... very sweet - Yes, the store is wicked small, spider webs, dust everywhere, all the tanks seems a bit questionable - but if you walk in & first impression of only analyzing what you see without speaking to the owner - you will miss out on the love he has for his animals- I will definitely be purchasing some of his underwater frogs they were so excited to follow my finger & not shy away! Proves that he gives each animal attention 🥰
July 29 · Tajahnea BellI bought my two cats there when they were kittens, I still have them. They will be 18 years old in a couple of months.
May 21 · Michael QuirkJim, all around good guy! I baught exotic pet from at good price and good advice. Not only on buisness phone, but even gave me his private number for when hes with his family on case i had an issues or concerns
April 17 · Amanda Charbonneaucompletely convinced that the good reviews here were bought. The place is FILTHY and so are the fishes water tanks. There were piles of dead fish in some and a dead beta fish in one of the tiny, basically water cups that they keep them in. The water stunk and looked as if it hasn't been cleaned in a while. or even looked at. It was too late to go into the back, where the birds and other little guys are but the front was depressing enough. Hurt my heart for the animals suffering there. The guy at the reg(idk if owner) was also really dismissive when I came in, I said hello and he just stared. So all in all, if I could rate this place 0 stars I would. It's dirty and a sad environment for these animals. I pray it gets shut down.
April 03 · Nevaeh JamesI love visiting Jim and his son! The Pet Shop has a variety of products and pets. Jim is absolutely helpful and kind!
