ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinic (Appointment Only) Introduce
For pet owners in the Bronx and across New York City, finding reliable, affordable veterinary care can be a challenge. The ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinic, located at 501 E 161st St, is an essential resource that addresses this need head-on. As a veterinarian and part of the ASPCA's mission, this clinic provides vital services to help pet owners in the community keep their animals healthy and in their homes. Unlike a full-service animal hospital, this clinic specializes in primary and preventative care, making it an ideal choice for routine check-ups, vaccinations, and other essential services. The clinic operates on an appointment-only basis, ensuring that each visit is managed with care and efficiency, despite the high demand for their services.
The core mission of the ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinic is to make veterinary care accessible to communities where such resources are often scarce. They provide a vital safety net for pet owners, offering services that are critical for an animal’s well-being but may otherwise be out of reach. The clinic is staffed with professionally trained and licensed veterinarians and technicians who are dedicated to animal welfare. As one customer noted, the staff is "very nice and friendly" and the facility is "very clean." While the appointment process can be challenging due to high demand and specific eligibility requirements, the fact that many New Yorkers are able to get their pets the care they need speaks volumes about the clinic’s purpose and effectiveness. The clinic's focus on a limited, but crucial, set of services allows them to deliver high-quality care efficiently and affordably to a community that needs it most.
Located at 501 E 161st St in the Bronx, NY, the ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinic is strategically positioned to serve the local community. Its location makes it easily accessible for residents of the South Bronx and surrounding neighborhoods. The clinic's commitment to accessibility is evident in its physical layout, which includes a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. These amenities ensure that all pet owners, regardless of their physical abilities, can comfortably and safely bring their animals in for care. The clinic also provides a gender-neutral restroom, further demonstrating its dedication to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
As the name "Appointment Only" suggests, planning is a key part of the process for visiting this clinic. The ASPCA has implemented an appointment-based system to manage the high volume of pets needing care and to minimize wait times. While getting an appointment can sometimes be a difficult process, as one reviewer pointed out, the system helps ensure a smoother, more organized visit once you are scheduled. The clinic’s staff is known for their communication, with one pet parent praising the vets for calling to verify information and for being responsive to client needs. This professional and organized approach helps ensure that despite the high demand, pets receive the attention they need in a timely manner.
The ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinic offers a comprehensive list of primary and preventative veterinary services for cats and dogs. Their focus on essential care allows them to provide high-quality services efficiently to a large number of animals. These services are crucial for keeping pets healthy and preventing more serious medical issues down the road. The clinic is equipped with in-house diagnostics to support their primary care mission, but they are not a full-service hospital and do not offer things like complex surgery or overnight hospitalization. Here is a detailed overview of the types of care they provide:
- Primary Pet Care and Preventative Vet Care, including Physical Examinations and Medical Exams.
- Comprehensive vaccination services for both dogs and cats, such as Rabies Vaccinations, Canine Vaccines, and Feline Vaccines.
- Spay/Neuter Procedures and Neuter Surgeries.
- Treatment for common ailments like Eye And Ear Infections.
- In-House Diagnostics to aid in diagnosis and treatment.
- Additional preventative services, such as nail trims, comb outs, and parasite prevention.
- Humane euthanasia services when necessary to relieve a pet's suffering.
- Assistance with pet adoption, including care for rescue animals and adoptable dogs.
Several key features and highlights make the ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinic a valuable asset to the New York City pet community. One of the most significant highlights is the clinic’s dedication to providing accessible and affordable services. The ASPCA's mission is rooted in preventing animal cruelty and keeping pets with their loving families, and this clinic is a direct reflection of that. While the appointment process can be challenging, the fact that they offer these services, and for some eligible clients, at a very low or no cost, is a tremendous benefit. The kindness and professionalism of the staff are also a major highlight, as noted in a review where a nurse provided water to a client feeling unwell, demonstrating a compassionate and welcoming environment for both people and pets.
The clinic's focus on preventative care is another key feature. By providing routine services like vaccinations and physical exams, they help pet owners stay ahead of potential health issues, which can save a pet's life and a family's financial resources in the long run. The clean facility and good communication from the vets are also highlights that contribute to a positive experience. While a reviewer noted that a doctor seemed a bit "rushing," they also acknowledged that it's likely due to the high volume of animals the staff needs to see, which is a testament to the demand for the clinic’s services. This shows that despite the pressure, the staff is committed to providing care to as many animals as possible. The clinic also plays a role in the larger ASPCA network, offering services that support pet adoption and keeping animals in their homes.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I took my puppies here to get their vaccinations. The facility is very clean from what I saw and the communication with the vets was really good especially the first time because I was not personally able to go but they called me on the phone just to verify certain things which I thought was great because it was my son who is older who took my puppy. The process to actually be seen is actually pretty difficult. I had to wait over 2 hours at 8:00 a.m. on the dot in order to get the appointment. So the process is actually pretty difficult and you have to be within a certain zip code. I am happy I was able to get everything done.
April 12 · Samore RQuick and easy appointment. I suggest going in to make an appointment then getting their email for further communication. Clean facility and nice staff. The Dr. Is alittle rushing but I can imagine the she has a lot of animals to see. The nurses are welcoming and even gave me water when allergies started acting up.
May 14 · Sonja TaylorExcellent service and very clean. Everyone I encountered was very pleasant from the receptionists to the doctor. They informed me that I would have to wait for a while but I was called in within 5-10mins. The nurse India was very pleasant and gentle. The doctor was friendly and knowledgeable. The director came and played with my puppy. I would recommend to anyone
July 30 · Shanaya SI couldn't be more grateful for the attention to this place. They also treated my cat NOLA, who suffered an infection and went blind, very well and still took great care of him with love and care. I also had the saddest experience of putting my other cat Tiger to sleep due to a very complicated situation and the vet treated me very well and all the staff are friendly, and the place is very clean and welcoming. I recommend them because they are very nice people. Professional, friendly and full of love for animals. The Veterinarian named Jones is a sweetheart, I think she is the best... here at Bronx Community Veterinary Clinic 501 E 161 St, know why she was called and chosen to save lives and help the less fortunate animals. For me she is the best doctor, she really has love and passion for what she does. I bless all these women and men who give everything for animals. In the Bible it tells us that everything you do for God's creation, the Animal Kingdom, is not in vain and you will be rewarded by God! 1 Corinthians 15:58. ✝️❤️🐾🐶🐱
October 08 · Ruth PaniaguaOne of my babies passed away last month and the team at this ASPCA was amazing during one of the saddest days of our lives. They were attentive, compassionate and empathetic. Thank you so much, we got our ashes when you said we would as well as his paw prints. We truly can’t thank you enough for taking care of us and our Toby.
