July 14 · Barbra LorenzoI recently took my 11 week old puppy for his first vet exam to Point Pleasant Veterinary Hospital. That morning, my puppy seemed to have an upset stomach. He vomited right after he ate his breakfast. He was a bit quiet but still playful. At his appointment, I explained about the puppy's unusual vomiting. After examining Griffin, including palpating his abdomen, the vet decided that he was well enough to receive his distemper vaccine. I asked what reactions might occur with this shot, and was told that the normal reaction was tiredness and lethargy. We headed home. Ninety minutes later, Griffin vomited. He vomited five times over the next three hours. Because he is so small (around 5 pounds) I was concerned that he could become dehydrated. Also, vomiting was not mentioned as a possible reaction to the vaccine. At 4 p.m. I called the Point Pleasant Vet Hospital and explained Griffin's symptoms to the young woman who answered the phone. I told her that Griffin needed to return to the office to be re-examined due to the severity of his illness. She seemed blase and unconcerned, but left the phone to check in with the doctor. She returned to the call and told me that the office was only open that night until 6:30, and they "had no available appointments." I hung up a bit shell-shocked and disappointed. I had carefully researched vets for my new puppy and chose this practice, one that prided itself on promoting the "human-animal bond." After I hung up, I came to my senses and called the office right back. I explained that I felt that the puppy needed to be seen and that their doctor had been the only one to treat Griffin and administer an injection, and surely the vet could fit in his re-exam at the end of regularly scheduled appointments. Again, the woman left the call to ask the vet. Again, the vet refused to see my puppy and told the receptionist to advise me to go to Garden State emergency vet services with Griffin if he vomited again! I was flabbergasted. The response to this crisis was unprofessional and utterly lacking in compassion.I reached out to Sea Girt Animal Hospital and was urged to come to their office immediately with Griffin, although he was not yet their patient. After reviewing Griffin's events of the day and his symptoms, the vet palpated his abdomen. She advised that she felt a hard knot in his belly, and suggest an x-ray to rule out an obstruction. She returned to the exam room to report that Griffin had some foreign object in his belly, and may have ingested something several days prior that led to an obstruction. She advised me to go to Garden State emergency vet hospital for him to be evaluated, but not before calling that hospital to get advice on giving Griffin medication to ease his pain. I reported directly to the hospital. After 24 hours of treatment, Griffin has returned home and is doing well. The services rendered by Point Pleasant Veterinary hospital were totally inadequate and completely unprofessional. If I had waited until the next day to seek treatment for Griffin, I may have lost him. Refusing to re-exam Griffin was shocking. GIven a second chance to palpate his belly, perhaps the Point Pleasant vet would have felt this suspicious hard spot and advised me accordingly. However, the response by this office was totally lacking in compassion and common sense. Such unprofessional behavior dictates my decision to seek veterinary care elsewhere.
