Choosing a veterinary hospital, especially for emergency or specialty care, is a crucial decision. VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital is a facility that is worth choosing for many reasons, but it is also important for pet owners to understand the context of its operations, especially concerning finances and service efficiency, which are common points of discussion in reviews.
One of the most compelling reasons to choose VCA West Los Angeles is its capacity for handling complex and critical cases. The staff's expertise in fields like oncology, neurology, and surgery is second to none. The review from the owner of Murphy, who was diagnosed with oral melanoma, perfectly illustrates this. The owner praised the doctors for being "incredibly compassionate, knowledgeable, and attentive," and for adjusting the care plan based on "even small changes." The hospital's support during this difficult time, including their willingness to see the pet quickly during an emergency and the thoughtful gesture of the handwritten card, shows a deep commitment to patient care and client empathy.
On the other hand, a review concerning an emergency visit highlights a key issue often found in large, high-tech hospitals: the business side of medicine. The customer's frustration with the wait for an "exorbitant" estimate and the policy on medication refills points to a systemic challenge in balancing comprehensive care with cost and administrative efficiency. It underscores the fact that while the medical care itself may be excellent, the financial aspects and related policies can be a source of stress. It’s important for pet owners to be prepared for the costs associated with specialized and emergency care, as it is often more expensive than a regular family vet.
Despite these challenges, the ability to walk into a clean, organized, and professional facility at any hour and receive a thorough diagnosis and a range of options is invaluable. The comprehensive nature of the hospital, which includes an in-house pharmacy, a full laboratory, and advanced imaging, means that pets can receive a rapid diagnosis and treatment, which is critical in emergency situations. While the cost is a factor, the quality of care—including access to specialists and cutting-edge treatments—is a major draw. For a pet owner facing a serious or complex health issue with their companion, VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital offers a level of care and expertise that few others can match, making it a critical resource in the Los Angeles area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1What a disaster. My dog had an emergency and I heard the wait at this place was 6 hours less. So we made the drive. We saw the doctor within 1.5 hours. The doctor was good. Then the nightmare. After discussing the treatment plan I waited 45 mins then they came out with the “estimate”. My dog had been suffering in pain with no pain meds for 45 mins for their staff to come up with the estimate. This underlines their bottom line. They tried to charge me an exorbitant amount for medications which I found out there is a 51$ fee to fill meds. I asked for just 1 pill of the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory so that I could fill at a pharmacy the next day and they would not do it. They gave me a hassle when I asked for written scripts and then when I asked for them to be called into the Costco pharmacy they never were. Clearly they don’t care about the infection my dog is brewing but rather they want more money. This is extortion. I did eventually get my script from Costco and saved myself more than 100$. Also, their vet fee was 120$ more expensive than the other 24 hour emergency vet. The care I got was not worth the extra money, it did not end up saving me time and it certainly did not save me any emotional turmoil. There are other emergency vets, I recommend going to another vet.
August 27 · Miles mcintoshWe turned to VCA West LA for our dog Murphy’s oral melanoma diagnosis and radiation therapy. We were able to get our first oncology appointment within a week of calling, and begin radiation a couple weeks later. Both Dr. Gabrielle Carter and Dr. Brittney Stanton were incredibly compassionate, knowledgeable, and attentive. Each week, they adjusted his care plan based on even small changes to make sure he was as comfortable as possible. After completing radiation, we brought Murphy to the emergency room three times—once for vestibular symptoms, and twice more during a sudden decline. Each time, we were seen quickly as a walk-in, and the vets explained every option thoroughly, without rushing us. They did everything they could for him as an outpatient (our choice), and thanks to their support, Murphy was able to pass at home with us.The hospital is clean, organized, and staffed by people who clearly care. It’s expensive, but we never felt pressured. After Murphy passed, we received a handwritten card signed by the entire care team. That gesture meant everything.
May 11 · Kaitlin BasalloWe admitted to VCA late at night with our dog in critical condition following multiple seizures. The vets and staff were so accommodating and helpful walking us through the different scenarios and treatment options, discussing risks and concerns and benefits and helping us decide on helping our sweet angel move over the rainbow bridge. Our daughter in the east coast wanted to be with us and they crafted a plan to help keep our baby stable and comfortable for the night and then gave us a private room to spend some time with her. Their concern for our baby and care for our family during this difficult time was nothing less than exceptional with everyone that we encountered going out of their way to help us. We live 90 minutes away but the experience would convince me to go out of the way to bring any of our other fur babies there for care in the future
August 30 · Alan HurdWe had our 1 year old great dane have her laparoscopic spay and gastropexy done here. The surgical team was great, and the email follow ups were wonderful. Thank you guys fir taking care of our Roula!
June 23 · Valerie N.We took our elderly 17-year old three-legged cat who was having walking/neurologic problems to VCA West for an assessment. As soon as we walked in the door we were treated with great kindness. The doctor was a little backed-up, but the front desk kept us fully updated--then they took our cat into a treatment room so they could do a full neurologic assessment: see her walk & check her responsiveness, after which, we had a very good meeting with the neurologist, Dr. Owen, who laid out all the options (which were limited given our cat's advanced age). But Dr. Owen spent as much time with us as we needed, and compassionately answered all our questions. VCA is a big animal hospital that covers the gamut of services & specialties, but they made our loved one feel very special.
